Slugs celebrate Canada day too!
Victoria, British Columbia (Vancouver Island)
Actually woke up to our alarm on time today; planned an early start to get to the sea lions cave before their supposed midday lunch hunt
Drove along the southwest coast of the island and found our unmarked pull off … there was such little information online about actually getting to the caves, so we followed a blogger’s instructions; we soon realized her directions were untrustworthy; we found our way through the woods to the “trail” and followed the logging tape on a very lightly traveled trail with some treacherous terrain to the ocean, keeping a vigilant eye to the ground for massive slugs; we made it to the clearing and no sea lions to be found; we kept following the “trail” along th coastline and saw two swimming in the distance (it almost looked like they we’re looking at us)… we watched them pop their heads up every couple of minutes as they swam back toward the direction we came
Drove over to Sombrio beach; parking was limited (we learned later that it was Canada Day - a public holiday); we followed the stream to mouth and worked our way to the main beach, skipping rocks along the way… there were tents sprinkled all over between the tree line and the ocean; Oslo immediately made two black lab friends (Winston - 11-month full English; Riley - 11-year lab mix) and they played fetch and swam while we chatted with their owners (never did catch their names); walked eastward to locate the “secret” waterfall - unlike the sea lions cave, it was easy to find; we followed the stream and walked back into the gorge
On the drive home, Liz learned how to turn off Oslo’s e-collar for the first time in 2.5 years
Campground: Malahat Mountain Meadows RV Park
