A visitor in the night

Friday, November 4th: El Chalten, Argentina

  • There isn’t much to do in El Chalten if you’re not hiking. Though it was intended to be a rest day, we went for a short stroll along the river, catching an unmarked trail. It was another beautiful day and people were out rock climbing and paragliding.

  • In the afternoon, we hiked to the Chorillo del Salto waterfall. We took the long way from town. Though the water was murky closer to El Chalten in the river delta, the water that flowed from the waterfall was crystal clear. After spotting several young rainbow trout downstream, we followed the river and attempted to take an alternate path to the main road. We made it about halfway and turned back without a clear trail.

  • We had dinner and scoured AirB&B for our extended stay in December. We were limited by our criteria: must be pet friendly, in budget, close to a larger city, have access to outdoor activities, a backyard, recent renovations / modern decor, etc. Reasonable, right? We found very few places that met our needs, but had a couple of good leads in Austin, Texas and Fayetteville, North Carolina.

  • In the middle of night, as we laid sound asleep, we were simultaneously jolted awake by the sound of a soft meow. Straight ahead was the black cat that lived on the property. She was standing on the dresser near our feet and staring straight at us. Matt chased her into the kitchen, picked her up and set her back outside of the bedroom window.
