An active rest day
Saturday, November 5th: El Chalten, Argentina
We woke up intending to hike to Laguna Torre. It would have been a scenic, moderately challenging full-day hike. At the last minute, we changed course and opted for something a little shorter to reserve our strength for the upcoming W.
We drove 37 KM north on a long gravel road to Lago del Desierto. We followed the river from town as it cleared up, sourced from a flowing glacial stream guaranteed to hold trout. Though we brought our fishing gear with us, we didn’t purchase a license in town. We passed over seven rickety bridges and by a few quiet campgrounds and estancias / refugios. The scenery was beautiful, but not nearly as popular as the areas closer to town.
We arrived to the private land, paid our entrance fee and hiked through the forest to the Huemul glacier and lake. The water was turquoise, even more colorful than the water in Lake Louise. Between the glacier just above the lake, it is one of our favorite views.
We headed back Chalten, stopped at the Airbnb quick and headed up the block to Wafleria for some delicious sweet and savory waffles. Along with the best hot chocolate ever!
