A VERY close call
Monday, September 26th: Crete, Greece
We got up and drove into the Chania village. Aside from walking around and exploring, we were on a mission to find Matt a new hat and a power adapter since ours crapped out.
As we were parallel parking the car on the street, Matt wanted to inch forward and give himself a little more room on the back end. He thought he put it into first gear, but instead it was in reverse. He gassed it and then slammed on the breaks an inch from the car behind us.
After recovering from that traumatic experience, we walked through the town and stopped in every store that sold hats. We must have shopped at 10+ … most of which sold the same set of cheap souvenir hats that all said “I Love Crete” … we even stopped at several sporting goods and apparel stores, but their hat selection was limited. Greeks must not wear hats. Finally we stopped at a surf shop called the Salty Drop (where they also performed tattoos and piercings) and found an RVCA flat brimmed hat that will do the trick for the next 8 weeks.
Toward the end of the day, we drove over to the Seitan Limania beach. We were greeted by the local goats. As soon as we stepped out of the car and reached for an apple, they came trotting over. After sharing our snacks, we followed the short rocky trail down the cliff to the water. The dry clay dirt and rocks that towered above reminded us a lot of Arizona. We reached the water where a narrow canal opened up to the ocean. As we waded out into the shallow water, flesh eating fish attacked our legs. They were mostly harmless.
We swam around and met a guy from upstate New York that offered to take our picture. Then we climbed back up to the car and headed back to the AirB&B, catching a beautiful sunset on the way.
