The most beautiful beach

Tuesday, September 27th: Crete, Greece

  • After deciding to extend our stay on Crete and forgo Meteora and hiking Mount Olympus, we planned a pretty relaxed itinerary. Today was another beach day. We drove further west on Crete to Balos lagoon / beach. It wasn’t far, but the four miles along the mountain was a slow drive as we caravanned with several other cars. It was so bumpy that our Apple watches were tracking extra steps and mileage. With two miles to go we passed a vacant car and two guys in neon orange swim shorts and flip flops were walking up ahead. They were trying to hitch a ride the rest of the way, but no one took them up. We agreed to give them a ride and they crawled into the backseat. They were cousins from Spain on holiday.

  • After parking, we are our Greek salad in the car and then made the trek down to the lagoon. The view from above was absolutely gorgeous - turquoise water and sand bars swirled together and bordered by red rock mountains.

  • We made it all the way down and waded in, but it was windy and the water temperature was colder than we expected. We walked around the beach and parked ourselves on a set of chairs that only costed $10 for the day. We napped and read, but mostly people watched. On our way back, we ran into the same guy from upstate New York and he introduced us to his sister… what are the odds!

  • We skipped the Falssarna beach, stopped at the grocery store and made dolmades and Greek salad for dinner.

  • Accommodations: AirB&B, Kissamos, Crete, Greece
