It was definitely a grizzly!

Cody, WY (East Yellowstone National Park)

  • Spent our second day in Yellowstone on the northeast side of the park

  • Today was a day full of wildlife (all of the animals preparing before the expected storm?)

  • By the numbers:

    • Mule deer: countless

    • Elk: countless

    • Bison: countless

    • Moose: 1

    • Wolves: 2 + pups

    • Grizzly Bears: 8

    • Black Bears: 6

    • Pronghorn: 2

  • On the way into the park, we saw two younger grizzlies (maybe 1.5 year old cubs) in a horse pasture; as we stopped to watch, the group of horses chased them out and the bears ran across the road right in front of us

  • Right after we entered the northeast side of the park, we spotted a moose about 30 yards from the road

  • Lamar Valley was teeming with wildlife that was nearly impossible to see with the naked eye - we used our binoculars and borrowed spotting scopes to see a grizzly and three cubs + two more grizzlies

  • Met Jack and Diana; former corporate finance and CPAs that run a real estate business out of Bozeman; showed us the wolf den through their spotting scope; they are avid fly fishers just like us; they’ve done 15-day float trips in Mongolia and fished for golden dorado in the Ibera Marsh in Argentina

  • National Geographic like encounter was so spectacular - we passed by a mama black bear up on the ridge that had just hunted and fed on an elk calf; meanwhile the two baby cubs were hiding out in a nearby tree; she returned to nurse them and the mama elk called for her missing newborn

  • Saw a cinnamon colored black bear at Tower Fall

  • On the way out of the park, we saw a bison and calf that Matt was convinced was a massive grizzly and cub… but it wasn’t

  • Campground: Absaroka Bay RV Park
