Kjeragbolten
Jorpeland, Norway > Lysebotn, Norway
It was nice to wake up off the ground and in a warm bed this morning! We scrambled around the AirB&B to get ready and packed - we had to catch the first ferry out at 9:00 AM from Oanes to Lauvikk.
We boarded the ferry in our car, which was free with AutoPass, and took the short 15-minute ride across Lysefjord. Then we drove through Sinnes to grocery shop for dinner and attempt to charge the hybrid rental car without any success (the plug didn’t match the available cords).
We arrived at the Kjeragbolten car park around noon and started our trek. It was forecasted to rain all day… and it did. Fortunately, it was just a light rain and mist most times with heavy fog and an occasional gust of wind.
The hike had three big ascents, each with chains to help hikers climb up the slick rock faces and staircases built from giant sheet rock. It was slippery most of the way and Matt had to be extra careful with his footing since his boots are wearing thin.
Though wet, the hike was stunning. We had vast views of landscape made up of mountains and valleys, water flowing everywhere, small ponds / lakes, lush greenery, etc.
When we reached Kjeragbolten, we were almost alone. On a day with milder conditions, the trail and viewpoint would be much more crowded. I walked… more like crawled… onto the famous boulder, but felt it was a little too slick to stand up; Matt wasn’t confident in the grip his old boots offered in the wet conditions, so he opted out
We hiked back and made decent time. The climb down wasn’t as bad as it seemed. We saw a little ferret creature and tried to feed him trail mix. It was intrigued, but skeptical of coming too close, so we tossed peanuts his way.
We drove to Lysebotn - along the road, there were sheep everywhere. We set up our tent (a little too far from the facilities) in a grassy field near the waterfall. It continued to rain all evening. We made a frozen chicken tikka masala pack with ground chicken and a pack of Yum Yum Noodles. Matt also slurped up a pack of sardines in tomato sauce, he is really starting to like the canned fish!
Mom said Oslo had a good day at the cabin, even though it was a bit humid.
