Troll…
Tuesday, August 9th: Roldal, Norway > Odda, Norway
We slept without sheets or pillow cases, since they were “bring your own” at this AirB&B. We got up, ate a large passion fruit and melon yogurt, packed up the car and headed to Trolltunga.
We had to stop at two sporting goods stores in search of tent stakes. We overpaid $40 for two sets.
We arrived to the P2 parking lot and made it just in time to make the 10:30 AM shuttle to the upper P3 lot with just two seats left in the van. It saved us about 1.5 hours of uphill hiking on the paved road.
We hiked 10 KM (roughly 6+ miles) for 3 hours and 40 minutes to get to the top. The first ascent was the hardest and then it flattened out with some smaller inclines and declines along the way. From a distance, the famous Trolltunga rock didn’t look like much… just another jagged rock in the mountain face. But up close, the views were breathtaking.
We set up camp to claim our space near a watering hole. Finding a spot that was grassy, but not water logged, level and with some coverage to block the wind was a bit of a challenge, but we ultimately found a good spot. Although it became evident that around 100 yards away was a common bathroom spot for many campers. TP everywhere. Gross.
There weren’t too many people at Trolltunga, since most were day hikers and needed to be back before sunset. We met a tired chocolate lab, Amy… have her lots of pets in exchange for kisses.
We made lunch (Matt supplemented our Mountain House meals with a box of chicken / “kylling” that looked like cat food), climbed around and took our picture out on the ledge of the troll’s tongue. Then we went back to camp, took a marvelous nap, went back out to the overlook in the evening, took more pictures, cooked up dinner and got ready for bed.
