Breathtaking breakfast

Wednesday, September 21st: Santorini, Greece

  • After a 3.5 hour nap in our cabin, we woke up on Santorini around 4:30 AM. The sun wasn’t scheduled to rise for another three hours and it was too early to check into the AirB&B, so we drove in the dark to a parking lot in Oia and slept. We got up before most of the tourists flooded the village and had breakfast overlooking the iconic blue domes. We shared nutella pancakes and an acai bowl, quickly learning that Santorini prices were much higher.

  • We continued walking around Oia with no real agenda or destination, admiring the architecture built into the side of the mountain. We followed the cobblestone streets down the cliff to Ammoudi Bay where a line of donkeys were patiently waiting to give their next ride. Before making the trek back up, we sat along the waterfront and enjoyed a scoop of mango sorbet and frozen Greek yogurt with honey and nuts.

  • We had a slightly more upscale lunch than we were used to at Pelekanos. We had a salad with halloumi and a raki vinaigrette, chicken pasta and fancy gyro plate.

  • After the late lunch, we drove down toward the south end of the island to check into our AirB&B, which was one of two villas in a walled-in compound. They looked brand new and the caretaker mentioned they were building pools for next season. Young olive trees were the height of small bushes and scattered throughout the yard. This was the first AirB&B that included daily housekeeping, which was a nice touch.

  • After lounging around the AirB&B and napping for a bit, we drove a short distance to the black sand beach of Perissa. There was a strip of restaurants that were nearly empty, including a few boujee places that included champagne bottle service during the day on the beach. We ate at a more casual, come-as-you-are restaurant and shared some of our Greek favorites - Santorini salad (which was a version of a traditional Greek salad), grilled shrimp for Michaela and a gyro plate.

  • Accommodations: AirB&B, near Emporio, Santorini, Greece
