Gold diggers!
Tuesday, October 25th: Esquina, Argentina
We’re about 10 days behind on daily blog entries, so these next ones are going to be brief!
It was day #1 of fishing the Parana for the prized golden dorado – it was hot, and the river was dirtied from recent rain. After mixing up the rod cases and forgetting our leader, we met our guides / drivers – Toco and Ramon. Neither spoke English, which made it a bit challenging to acclimate to the new fishing style, understanding where to cast, learning about dorado behaviors, etc. Tim started with Gustavo and Matt & Liz together. We threw big heavy streamers. There wasn’t a ton of activity (strikes, or “picas” as they call them in Spanish) before lunch. We posted up on shore for lunch to escape the midday sun. We had two trays of cold empanadas and canned peaches with cream for dessert. Along the bank there were dorado surfacing, and before one of us could get up to cast, Toco took his shot and hooked a nice 10-pound fish. We were annoyed that he didn’t even offer to let us cast first. We threw crankbaits threw the same spots along shore for another 30 minutes without any hits. After lunch we rotated – Liz fished with Gustavo and Matt & Tim together. Matt landed a nice 12-pounder – the only one for the day. We were pleasantly surprised that we fished all day – 7 AM to 7 PM – when most punch out at exactly 8 hours. After we got back to the beach, we took the short ride to Posada de Muelles and had dinner (asado cooked beef, chorizo and lamb with salad, warm rolls and flan… which was a hard one to pronounce for Tim.
