Oslo, the BARK ranger

Elwha, Washington > Forks, Washington

  • Went for a morning walk around the campground loop, packed up, dumped at a full hookup site across from us and started making our way to Forks

  • Liz’s legs were still feeling like a combo of sunburn, bruising and pulled hamstrings, so we decided to skip anything that involved extensive hiking or biking; we drove around Lake Crescent and stopped at the visitor center where the Mount Storm King and Marymere Falls trails started so Oslo could become an official BARK ranger (which really seemed like a consolation offering for banning dogs from 99% of the trails in the park); the park ranger wasn’t very familiar with the program, so he gave us the card and we snagged the badge / tag from his table when he walked away; we inquired about the salmon run and he just answered our questions with questions; interesting they have Kokanee salmon (landlocked / non-anadromous sockeye) and two types of trout that are endemic to the Lake Crescent river system - Beardslee (rainbow) and Crescenti cutthroat

  • We continued on our way to Forks and stopped at the hardware-outfitter-grocery mega store to restock the pancake mix and a few other items; then we headed over to Forks Sol Duc campground, unprepared for a primitive site without any hookups; the campground owner directed us to our site options and gave us the skinny on the summer coho and steelhead runs on the Bogachiel, Hoh and Sol Duc rivers; his go to is the coon shrimp. The campground was out of potable water, so we tried the Bogachiel State Park without any luck and resorted to paying $10 to fill our tank at the 101 Forks Campground

  • We finally set up; it was raining all day, so we stayed in and worked on the website and our resumes, made burgers and a Mediterranean salad for dinner

  • Campground: Forks Sol Duc Campground
