Mud masks and truck naps

Tofino, British Columbia (Vancouver Island)

  • Went for a stroll throughout the campground and along the beach in the morning

  • Our neighbor was scaring off a bear he saw in the woods, which also caught Oslo’s attention

  • Drove over to Cox Bay Beach and watched the surfers (some newbies participating in group lessons like we will be tomorrow and others with more experience and skill)

  • Found the hidden path on the south end of the beach to the Cox Bay lookout point; we hiked the short and muddy trail to the top for a stunning view of the ocean shore and islands dotting the water

  • We drove to Uclulet and parked along the road to hike the Ancient Cedars trail, part of the Wild Pacific Trail (a nicely groomed / well maintained trail that traces the coast with various sections and viewpoints) … we took a nap in the truck - it was supposed to be 10-15 minutes and turned into an hour; we skipped the trail and drove through town to reach the Lighthouse Loop - also part of the Wild Pacific Trail; we followed it and saw the lighthouse built in 1915, watched four guys cliff jump 25 feet into the water and stumbled upon a Bonsai tree (which has recently fascinated Matt)

  • On the way back, we stopped at Ukee Scoops for a pre-dinner dessert; we shared a double scoop combo of passion fruit sorbet and maple walnut ice cream

  • Had dinner and went to the beach to read and watch the sun go down; we caught a glimpse of a seal near shore bobbing its head above the water like a submarine and then diving down and coasting before surfacing again

  • Had a campfire to close out the evening

  •  Campground: Crystal Cove Beach Resort
