The lost glasses
Thursday, September 29th: Crete, Greece
We woke up with fatigued butt cheeks. As we packed up, getting ready to move to the next AirB&B east of Chania near Rethymno, we realized Matt’s sunglasses were missing. He lost them somewhere between the bus ride and getting home the night before. The chances of recovering then were slim. Nevertheless we made the trip back to Omalos and were hopeful after calling the cafe - they had found a hat and pair of sunglasses that fit the description. The sunglasses they had were almost a perfect match, but not the ones we lost. Matt found them where he peed in the bushes the night prior about 30 yards from the cafe in the parking lot and over the stone wall.
We made our way toward the Rethymno and stopped to pick up groceries at a Lidl supermarket, which seemed to be like an Aldi - budget store with low prices, limited SKUs and minimal shelf organization. If you wanted to locate a box of pasta, there was a good chance you’d find it in four different aisles.
Upon entering the store, we were greeted by the heavenly light of the pasty shelves. They had spanakopita, multiple cheese pies, bougatsa, sausage rolls, a variety of donuts, fresh loaves of bread and more. We caved immediately. We walked out with a spinach pie, cheese pie and two donuts. We devoured them in the car with traces of phyllo flakes everywhere. And then we went back into the store for round two… another two donuts and a sausage roll.
We checked into our AirB&B and met our wonderfully adorable hosts - Debbie and Manolis. They showed us around and prepared homemade pastissio, orange cake and bread for us. Plus they left juice, water and a bag of apples. That level of hospitality was a welcome surprise.
We relaxed for the rest of the evening. We watched Blonde - the biopic on Marilyn Monroe - and we’re very disappointed. Matt was ready to turn it off after 20 minutes.
